Hi, I'm
Shivani Unakar

I’m a food explorer and storyteller, particularly interested in the intersection of food, people and place. I am keen to examine how these three elements influence identity, culture and systems at large. I travel with the objective of experiencing regional food cultures within their historical, geographic and political contexts.

My stories have been published in The Goya Journal, Roads & Kingdoms, and Food Forward India, among other platforms.

Trained in culinary operations and hospitality management, I have worked in the kitchen at Toast & Tonic Bengaluru, at A Perfect Bite Cook Studio and Food Consultancy Mumbai, in the field with small-holder coffee growers at Black Baza Coffee Co. and on the editorial team of the annual Godrej Food Trends Report, among other projects. These experiences have allowed me to gather varied perspectives on Indian food systems.

Since 2020, I have been a freelance researcher and communicator, working on independent, collaborative, and commissioned projects focused on food. If you have a project for which I may be a good fit, do get in touch!

Outside of work, I enjoy learning about traditional art and textiles, solving puzzles and listening to science podcasts.

Research

Over the years, I have worked on a number of projects that have required primary and secondary research, through reading, interviews, and fieldwork across urban and rural settings.

Writing & Content

I enjoy telling compelling stories centred around food. I have created content for written and video projects, feature essays and guides, client websites, and more.

Education

I've had the opportunity to research and produce course material for university students, develop curricula for knowledge and skill-based workshops, and speak about food at educational institutes of various disciplines.
