Coffee has been an area of fascination for some years, and I consider myself lucky to have had this beverage spill into my work in a few different ways over the years. For the Godrej Food Trends Report 2022, I produced a six-page written and visual spread that takes a close look at the evolution of India's coffee consumption culture, breaking down the first, second, third and fourth waves of coffee in an Indian context. For this essay, I interviewed some of India's most interesting people in coffee, and in many ways, the pioneers of their space, including Sunalini Menon, a coffee consultant and the first woman to be a certified coffee cupper in India, Matt Citranjan, co-founder of Blue Tokai Coffee and Ashish D’Abreo, co-founder of Maverick & Farmer Coffee, Tapaswini Purnesh of Harley Estates, Arshiya Bose, founder of Black Baza Coffee Co., Geetu Mohnani, an independent coffee consultant, Suhas Swarakanath of Benki Brewing Tools, and more.
